As someone who grew up between these two cultures, I’ve always been fascinated by the intersections of community, creativity, and well-being. Zinzi de Brouwer brings a unique perspective, shaped by her experiences working with Indigenous and artisanal communities. Particularly, the Tsonga women in Mozambique, to foster design processes that focus on equity, restoration, and collective wisdom, instead of the dominant Western model.

In deze aflevering neem ik je mee in de wereld van modeontwerper Mirjam Manusama en haar slow fashion label Manusama Nuance. Met mijn label Manusama Nuance creëer ik bewuste kunst, androgyne, tijdloze mode en kostuumontwerpen voor dansers. Voor mij is het van groot belang om vrij te zijn in mijn ontwerpproces, terwijl ik me bewust ben van de herkomst van mijn stoffen en de impact daarvan op de waarde van mijn ontwerpen. Mijn doel is om bewustwording te creëren voor verantwoorde consumptie en productie, door een transparant label te creëren met hoogwaardige stoffen.

Kalkidan deelt hoe haar werk is ontstaan vanuit de noodzaak om haar verhaal niet in één medium te hoeven “opsluiten”. Ze neemt ons mee in haar proces: van praktische voorbereiding (zoals het werken met nieuwe tools en 3D-modellen) tot diepgaand onderzoek naar concepten als heterotopia, werelden in werelden, en hoe dat terugkomt in haar idee van een “third world” als thuis. Over de designer:

Kalkidan Hoex is een interdisciplinair kunstenaar. Het thema van deze podcast is interdisciplinair design. Kalkidan is geadopteerd uit Ethiopië en opgegroeid in Nederland. In haar interdisciplinaire werk onderzoekt ze het doordringende gevoel van leven tussen twee werelden dat haar het grootste deel van haar leven heeft gevolgd. Het werk spreekt rechtstreeks degenen aan die zij als onderdeel van haar eigen identiteit beschouwt: jongeren van gemengde afkomst, die uit hun land of herkomst zijn geadopteerd of met hun families uit hun geboorteplaats moesten vluchten. Door haar praktijk onderzoekt ze de fijne kneepjes van haar eigen identiteit, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd verbinding maakt met deze groep die ze identificeert als The New Tribe.

Afgelopen jaar vertrok ze van Rotterdam naar een boerderij in Welsum om een regeneratief model op te zetten. Samen bespreken we regeneratieve mode en het concept om terug te gaan naar de natuur.

In deze aflevering duiken we in de wereld van Digital Fashion en laten we zien hoe technologie, storytelling en duurzaamheid elkaar kunnen versterken.

Suza vertelt hoe haar route via experimenten met natuurlijke materialen, rework en vintage uiteindelijk uitkwam bij Clo3D: software waarmee je kleding digitaal kunt ontwerpen, simuleren en prototypen, zonder fysieke stof te verspillen. Ze neemt ons mee in haar ontwerpproces, dat start vanuit emotie (fascinatie of frustratie), vervolgens de diepte ingaat met onderzoek en referenties, en daarna via schetsen, collages en digitale prototypes vorm krijgt. Ook hoor je hoe “craft” in de digitale wereld er anders uitziet: van filestructuren en samenwerken tussen verschillende software tot het zware renderproces dat soms dagen kan duren.

Daarnaast bespreken we de ethische vragen die opkomen in deze nieuwe digitale realiteit: wie mag je namaken als avatar, wat betekent toestemming, en hoe bescherm je jezelf in een wereld waar regels en wetgeving nog achterlopen? Suza deelt eerlijk hoe zij daarin haar eigen grenzen en oplossingen zoekt, vaak door te vertrekken vanuit zichzelf en haar identiteit.

Draait mode om collabs en social impact? En hoe je creativiteit kunt inzetten om echte connecties en verandering in de stad te bouwen?

Yorbi vertelt hoe hij vanuit digital design en illustratie via het creatieve collectief The Seed steeds meer ruimte maakte voor maatschappelijke thema’s in zijn werk. We duiken in zijn overstap naar mode en hoe HEDONE werkt met verschillende productieroutes: van volledige productie (A tot Z), tot white label bewerkingen en samenwerkingen. Aan de hand van een concreet voorbeeld, een trainingspak als ode aan 90’s hiphop en straatcultuur, legt hij uit hoe inspiratie, onderzoek, storytelling en “Rotterdams DNA” samenkomen in ontwerpkeuzes, sampling en materiaalkeuze.

Ook praten we open over integriteit: wanneer zeg je ja tegen een collab en wanneer niet? En hoe zorg je dat samenwerkingen niet exploitatief worden, maar juist waarde terugbrengen naar de community? Tot slot komt een belangrijk spanningsveld aan bod: duurzaam en eerlijk produceren versus betaalbaarheid voor je eigen doelgroep. Jorbi deelt eerlijk wat er misging, wat hij daarvan leerde, en hoe hij nu zoekt naar oplossingen via nearshoring (Portugal) én de droom om uiteindelijk (deels) lokaal in Rotterdam te produceren.

In this episode, we spotlight the world of sportswear through the lens of Riam Sanusi.

Riam walks us through her non-linear process, starting with wide research across culture and material exploration, films, books, exhibitions, fabric sourcing, and conversations, before moving into shape design, pattern making, prototyping, and building tech packs for manufacturing. A big part of the episode digs into the reality of production: the back-and-forth revisions, the importance of wear- and wash-testing, and the communication challenges that happen when manufacturers interpret instructions differently, especially when there are no physical samples to anchor the vision.

We also touch on the practical sustainability choices she’s making right now, like working in smaller quantities, using pre-orders, and cutting unnecessary packaging. In our conversation, we explore what it means to use fashion as a medium for ideas, especially when the work is shaped through collaboration with plants, fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms. Dasha Tsapenko works at the intersection of architecture, art, material research, and fashion. Her practice explores how humans can co-create with non-human species—plants, fungi, bacteria, and microorganisms, to develop textiles and wearable pieces, and to question what design can be when it becomes a shared ecosystem.

In this conversation, we step into the world of high fashion accessories and zoom in on one of the most complex materials in the industry: leather. Onyedika shares what it really means to work as a dedicated accessories designer across different markets and cities, and how designing for menswear versus womenswear often shifts the balance between function, form, and the expectations we’re taught to accept as “normal.”

What I find especially interesting is how Onyedika frames inclusive design and unisex product: not as a trend to add more, but as a chance to simplify, reduce, and design with longer life in mind. We also unpack Onyedika’s design process from the first question (“for whom, and for which moment?”) into research, experimentation, development, and the often-underrated design decisions that happen during production.

Finally, we move into the ethical tension of loving a material while questioning its impact. Onyedika reflects honestly on how sustainability wasn’t part of formal fashion education, and how many designers have to “relearn” the industry once they’re inside it—especially when it comes to transparency, responsibility, and consumption.

De meeste creatievelingen blijven binnen één discipline, zoals architectuur, fotografie of mode, maar Nixon herschrijft de regels. Albert Jan Metselaar studeerde in 2011 af in modeontwerp aan de Willem de Kooning Academie. Na zijn afstuderen begon hij met het ontwerpen van herenkleding en combineerde dit met grafisch ontwerp. In 2012/13 ontwikkelde hij een herencollectie genaamd ‘Imaginary Youth’, die hij in juni 2013 presenteerde tijdens Fashion Clash Maastricht.

Fascinated by craft, Sabrina has worked with a remote Peruvian weaving community for her final MA project before undertaking the Common Thread residency for the British Council.
